Sal LaMattina to retire

Representing Charlestown on the Boston City Council for 11 years, Sal LaMattina has announced he will retire after his term is completed in January. LaMattina has worked for the City in several capacities for 30 years during which time he has been a strong advocate for neighborhood services, including safety, clean streets, parks, and schools. His considerable energies have also gone to advocating for expanded water ferry service to connect Boston’s waterfront neighborhoods. Besides Charlestown, District 1 includes East Boston and the North End. The Friends of Charlestown Navy Yard plan to thank him in a public event before his retirement.

Typically, preliminary elections are held in September, followed by municipal elections in November. This year’s District 1 Council race is expected to attract several candidates.
